Xiao Baiyue of Taiwan (100 Peaks of Taiwan)
edited by Taiwan Mountain Cultural Corporation

Taiwan is a popular tourist destination among the people of Hong Kong. It has abundant mountains which make up many of its scenic spots—Hehuan Mountain, Taroko National Park and Elephant Mountain, just to name a few.

“Xiao baiyue” are a hundred distinctive mountain peaks with good terrain, rising less than 3,000 metres above sea level in the suburban areas chosen by a group of experts. It is an effort by the Taiwanese government in a bid to promote greater enthusiasm for hiking.

The mountains, many of which are little-known, particularly those on Orchid Island and in Penghu County, are organized into different chapters of the book based on their region. Each mountain covers two pages of description which comprises photos, background information, a simplified map, level of difficulty, transport information, points to note and others. Towards the end of the book is information on fitness training, clothing and equipment for hiking. There is also an article explaining the rationale behind developing a list like this, the idea of which has its roots in Japan and aims to deepen people’s knowledge about the characteristics of different cities and counties by highlighting the special mountains in suburban areas, and encouraging people to hike them.

Reading this book made me realize that with appropriate arrangement, visiting the usual popular tourist spots is no longer the only thing I can do when I travel to Taiwan next time. Going on a nice hike during an overseas trip will undoubtedly spice up your travel experience and leave you with a memorable impression.
